Vercingetorix, ancient Gaul leader surrenders to the emperor Caesar. Ancient military art prints of Vercingetorix by Henri-Paul Motte and Lionel Royer, published by Cranston Fine Arts, the military print company.

Versingetorix was the leader of the Gallic tribes, when in 56Bc Julius Caesar invaded Gaul, His homeland.  Versingetorix defeated a large Roman army at the battle of Gergovia. But Romans power was strong and later Versingetorix was besieged  in Alesia. he surrendered to the Romans  and throw his sword down at the feet of Caesar,  he was taken back to Rome and paraded  in the streets before being executed by strangulation.

Vercingetorix Throws Down His Arms at the Feet of Caesar by L Royer After the fall of the stronghold of Alesia in 52BC, Vercingetorix was the last Gallic Chieftain to submit to Caesar.

Vercingetorix Surrendering to Caesar by Henri-Paul Motte  Henri Motte studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme, and most of his works were shown at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. His major works were of historical pieces such as this one and    Hannibal Crossing the Rhone  both of these  receiving a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was awarded Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1892.
