 The battle of Mons was the first major battle fought by the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) The BEF had advanced along a 20 mile front along the Mons canal, and were on there left flank of the French 5th army. But when the French army had been defeated at the Battle of the Sambre on the 22nd August, The British commander Sir John French agreed to hold his position until the morning of the 23rd. The BEF were attacked by the German First Army . The German infantry advance was repelled by the British infantry and sustained very large losses: the British lost 1600 killed or wounded. But with the French forces retreating the British forces had no alternative but to retreat also, and on the morning of the 24th of August they began retreating to the outskirts of Paris over a fourteen day period.

 King Arthur received his wounds at the Battle of Camlann where he killed the dark knight Sir Mordred. Sir Bedevere (the Last of the Knights of the round table) with the dying King Arthur and from the haze a great black swan-like barge appears. On the barge are nine noble ladies, one of which is Queen Morgan Le Fay, and another being the lady of the Lake. They have come to take King Arthur to the isle of Avalon.

 Nigel Mansell leads the pack in his red No.5 Williams on the first lap of the 1992 British Grand Prix, closely followed by the McLarens of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger, with the No.19 Benneton of Michael Schumacher in fourth place.  Mansell went on to win this race, with his team-mate Ricardo Patrese taking second.  Senna retired 7 laps from the end, while Schumacher finished 4th ahead of Berger in 5th.

 On finals, Hawker Typhoon PD608 (5V-G) of 439 Sqn drifts over the threshold at a forward airstrip in Belgium after a mission during the winter of 1945.  RB326 is waiting to take off, whilst others taxi in to their dispersal.

Alone in the aerial defence of Malta in the early part of WW2, these three Gloster Gladiators, nicknamed <i>Faith</i>, <i>Hope</i> and <i>Charity</i>, saw such intense action against the invading Italian air force that the enemy's commanders were convinced that a much bigger force existed on Malta.  They are depicted here making a low pass over the destroyer HMS Dainty as she heads out of Grand Harbour from Sliema Creek.  Herself a veteran of much action in the early part of the war, HMS Dainty was lost to dive bombers off Tobruk on 24th February 1941.

 A trio of Spitfire Mk1s of 603 Sqn based at Biggin Hill are depicted on patrol in the Summer skies above Kent during the height of the Battle of Britain in August 1940. Lead aircraft is N3288 XT-H flown by Plt Off George Gilroy who finished the war with 14 confirmed victories, 10 shared and a further 14 aircraft destroyed in actions in which he was directly involved.
